What could be happening at Scotland campus?

November 30 – A group from New York has taken over Scotland School for Veterans Children campus and a whole lot of changes are coming down pretty fast.

The 169 acres of property has had a lot of back-and-forth in recent years.

In 2022, a holding company named Gable Holdings purchased the organization. There have been stories of disrepair in the buildings and employees not getting paid for their work.

This summer, the campus went up on the auction block.

Now it looks like an organization from New York is looking to make serious changes.

Current organizations using the campus are being asked to remove any religious symbols and vacate the property.

Attorney Clint Barkdoll said, “I’m really curious to see what lands there. It’s a huge property very important to Franklin County and that local community. So hopefully it’s going to be repurposed and used for things that benefit everyone. But from what you’re reporting, it sounds like we’re going to know a lot more within the next couple of weeks.”

Pat Ryan of NewsTalk 103.7FM pointed out, “There’s a huge statue of Jesus as you drive into that campus that is going to go and all the rest of the reference to a Christian iconography. Maybe that sheds some light onto the new tenants.”

Barkdoll said, “If it’s a commercial tenant, they would not want those things there. If it’s maybe some other church affiliation, non Christian denomination. We’ll see. I think that’s an interesting tidbit that you’re reporting that they want all of those things removed. It tells me that there may be some commercial purposes that are coming in there.”

PA Representative Rob Kauffman said, “My understanding is even the Scotland School for Veterans Children Alumni Association, which was told to vacate the campus and they have historically, through a few changes in owners, they have just been by deference, by historical reference been able to keep a small presence on campus because of the history of it. Those things are certainly concerning. Obviously, there’s nothing public and I am finding out about things through rumblings behind the scenes but my first gut instinct when I heard from New York wanted Christian symbols removed from campus, those sorts of things. I thought, well, I wonder if it’s some kind of Jewish school from New York. I reached out to some folks to try to confirm that and that’s what it sounds like, is that it’s going to be some kind of a Jewish boarding school, which would seemingly fit the previous charge of campus as a boarding school. So it would make sense if that’s the case, but everything that I hear that sounds to be the case.”

Ryan said, “Keep the thing alive one way or the other, not letting that go into disrepair is mission critical. We’ll see what happens here. It’s a shame it had to happen so fast.”

Michele Jansen of NewsTalk 103.7FM added, “Obviously, people are very grateful that the campus would be hopefully taken up and have a good financial future, have a good future in our community. We speculated it could be a religion that’s just not Christian, which would be very understandable then why they would not want the symbols of a different religion there. No problem with that.”
