Waynesboro girl mixes passion for pets with summer sales to help AHS

Charlotte VanAken, of Waynesboro (pictured with her father), has kept busy this summer selling lemonade to raise money for the Antietam Humane Society.

Charlotte is an AHS Shelter Buddy—part of a group of young volunteers who read to the animals to help them get socialized and used to people.

“She wanted to do more,” explained Kacie Morrell, AHS executive director. “Earlier this summer she went to her dad and asked him to build a lemonade stand so she could raise money for the animals.”

Charlotte raised $163 in August and another $305 in September for the shelter.

“Any donation amount from anyone is so appreciated and helps the animals, but when the younger generations step up to help our homeless animals it is so inspiring,” Morrell said. “Their passion at such a young age gives hope for all of us that maybe someday shelters won’t even have to exist.”
