Warfordsburg man charged with sexual assault, incest against granddaughter

02 February 2024- A Warfordsburg man is facing over a dozen charges following a series of alleged incidents against his granddaughter a decade ago. Dwight Merle Crawford is charged with felony rape of a child, felony aggravated indecent assault of a child, felony sexual assault, felony aggravated indecent assault without consent, felony aggravated indecent assault of someone less than 13, felony aggravated indecent assault, person less than 16, felony indecent assault person less than 13, felony corruption of minors, felony incest of a minor, felony statutory sexual assault, and two counts of misdemeanor indecent assault. Crawford is free on an unsecured bail of $100,000.

PSP were initially notified of a possible sexual assault that had occurred years ago by the victim’s mother when she contacted PSP McConnellsburg on October 28th. During this initial contact, police allegedly learned that the perpetrator was the victim’s paternal grandfather, Dwight Crawford.

Interviews were then conducted at a child advocacy center in Chambersburg about a week later with the victim. In these interviews, the victim allegedly told police that her grandfather would dote on her, giving her a large amount of attention, with the victim alleging that she considered him to be grooming her. Crawford would allegedly treat the victim as if they were in a relationship, which was to the dismay of the victim’s parents.

Eventually, this allegedly culminated into an incident where the victim was raped by Crawford outside his home. Crawford allegedly tried to clean her up afterwords.

Subsequent interviews with family members continued to echo these allegations, including a medical history of the victim.

Crawford himself was interviewed in November, with him reportedly denying all the allegations against him. Crawford reportedly denied acting like a boyfriend to the victim, as well as her staying over at his home.

Dwight Crawford is free on $100,000 awaiting a preliminary hearing.
