The stories from Afghanistan get worse every day

August 17 – With the complete withdrawal of American forces in Afghanistan over the weekend, the country is reeling from a massive Taliban takeover and the stories coming from the people continue to be utterly heart-wrenching.

A female CNN reporter who is maintaining her job and position was standing in front of Taliban soldiers with guns chanting death to America. She commented that they seemed nice, but followed that up with a statement on how bizarre it was.

Attorney Clint Barkdoll, Pat Ryan and Michele Jansen discussed Afghanistan this morning during the Big Talk on First News.

Barkdoll said, “I wonder if some of that’s being said for her own protection. This Clarissa Ward, she seems to be the main US reporter and she is there on the streets, on the ground and you watch the videos of last week, going into this past weekend, she’s dressed in street clothes what looked like your typical American on the streets of Afghanistan cities. Now today she’s dressed in a burka and behind her are guys with guns. She is in a really precarious, dangerous situation and I wonder is it because they can’t get her out of the country or is she choosing to be there, but the comment you just said, that is in fact what she said yesterday. Now whether she’s actually reporting at this point or is she doing that for her own safety? The place looks like just a mess. You saw the images yesterday. The streets are overrun. Those awful images from the airport. Can you imagine how desperate you would be that you’re so scared of the situation that’s happening over there that you’re hanging on to the wings of an airplane that’s taking off and you think that is a better way to live then maybe just staying on the ground in Afghanistan? I think there were now seven people they’re saying were killed as a result of that airplane that took off from the airport yesterday. It is a real mess. I think you’re going to see it continue to be like that for the next few days. I mean the airport is just overrun with these refugees trying to escape the country, including some Americans, and again, there’s not a real plan on how they’re going to get these people out of there, what they’re going to do to address this problem.”

Jansen added, “There was a horrible story of a girl that when they came to the house and they wanted her because she was of the right age to take her, she ran up to the roof and she jumped off and committed suicide because that was preferable to being taken as a wife of one of the new people in charge there. It is a hideous situation and I do think that reporter’s life and well-being is very much in danger. I don’t blame her for saying anything she needs to to keep herself safe. This is just horrible. To hear Biden make the excuses he did yesterday. Oh, the buck stops with me as he pointed fingers at absolutely everybody else.”

President Biden addressed the country for the first time yesterday since the Afghanistan pull out.

Barkdoll said, “What struck me too yesterday about his speech, not only saying the buck stops here and then pointing the finger and blaming everyone that has come before him is that he is universally being panned by the handling of this situation in Afghanistan. Military intelligence people, even people that I would say are on the left, liberals that are very supportive of Biden generally have been all critical of him. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone that is praising him or saying that this was a job well done and it’s still not clear what his plan is.”

A few months ago about two thirds of Americans were in favor of getting out of Afghanistan. A new poll came out yesterday and those numbers have dropped dramatically over the last couple days and it largely seems to be because of how it’s been handled.

Barkdoll said, “In theory people still like the idea of being out of these foreign wars, these foreign countries, but then when they see it executed the way it has been the last couple of days, suddenly their opinion shifts, saying well we want out, but we don’t want to get out like this has been done. Biden’s got a problem. Those images from the airport yesterday, you’re already saying some of the political pundits saying these are going to be the ads in 2024 that’ll be used against him and that may very well sink his entire presidency.”

Ryan said, “That’s a start on the advertising campaign. All you have to do is look at the gas pumps. Look at what you’re paying for groceries. Look at the mess and the mayhem that this president has caused. Seeing people falling off of planes as they’re in the air. Just disgusting.”

Barkdoll agreed, “Those images were just awful over there yesterday. As we speak, there are thousands of people crammed into that airport and the fear is that any minute the Taliban is going to come in there and actually take over the airport so those people are already in a precarious, dangerous situation that may soon be getting a lot worse.”

Even the American press is urging the government to do something. The New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal all have reporters that are trapped in Afghanistan that have no way to get out.

Barkdoll said, “They’re pointing out you gave us no notice of this. We would have had our people out long before this had we known this was about to happen. They are very concerned about their own resources that are sunk in that country and really in danger.”

Ryan pointed out, “Maybe if they covered the president and his incompetence all along here they wouldn’t be in such a position to sacrifice the country as the reporters that they are not uncovering this president. Not uncovering his China. Not uncovering Hunter Biden. Not uncovering the lie that was the fence around Washington DC. Now all of a sudden you’re absolutely concerned about your people. It’s sickening.”

What about shutting down the southern border?

Barkdoll said, “I think the opportunity would be there right now to do that. Biden is not giving any indication of doing it but again, you look at some of the reporting yesterday, some of these leaders in this Taliban takeover movement, it appears there’s at least one or two that were those prisoners that were released from Guantanamo Bay a year or so ago. It also looks like that some of them are in this mass prisoner release from last year. The fear is that as these guys not only got released and then went through Afghanistan, they could find their way back in to a Central American country or Mexico to try to get through the border, into the United States. I think there’s a really strong argument there that even if it’s not permanent, there ought to be a temporary pause. Shut that border down until the US government can get a handle on what’s going on for the protection of the people that are here in our country.”

Ryan said, “The terroristic threats have all been raised around the world because of the incompetence of this cognitive decline that is the president of the United States. Knocking on the door of 911 and its anniversary.”

Barkdoll confirmed, “The threat levels have been raised and apparently the intelligence community was already concerned about possible terrorism in the context of the 20th anniversary of 911 coming up well that now has just been incredibly exacerbated by this situation in Afghanistan. So it’s a very dangerous situation. We’re only four weeks away from that date and remember 20 years ago in the weeks and months after 911, the air patrols in the sky and how we went for months when they would have that color-coded system when things would be on high alert and how that would change often times the way we had to travel or the way we had to go about our lives day to day and for a lot of people that’s a long memory, but you wonder if those kind of things could be coming back when you look at some of the statements that are now coming out of the intelligence community.”
