19 January 2024- A Saint Thomas woman is behind bars and her child is in the custody of Children and Youth Services in Franklin County today after police were called to their home Thursday night. Theresa Margarito Carty is behind bars on $40,000 bail after being charged with two counts of felony child endangerment.
Pennsylvania State Police Troopers were initially notified and dispatched to Edgewood Avenue in Saint Thomas Township around 7pm on January 18th for a reported child that had been located by a neighbor. That five year old boy, police say, was found by the neighbor and later then wearing only a t-shirt and a diaper, with no shoes or pants on. When Troopers arrived, they logged the temperature as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, but with the wind child it felt like 23 degrees.
After collecting the boy, Troopers brought him back to his home, where they allegedly found the front door unlocked and his mother, Theresa Margarito Carty, asleep on the couch. Margarito Carty was interview at the home, saying the last time she saw her son was around 6:20pm. It was also at this time Margarito Carty allegedly put her 4 year old daughter to play unattended in the bathtub while she fell asleep on the couch. Police say that the juvenile boy that was found by neighbors could have been out of the house for around 60 minutes. Additionally, Margarito Carty allegedly told police that she knew her son knew how to unlock doors and that this was not the first time that he had escaped the house.
During police interviews with Margarito Carty, they say she appeared to be slow in verbal response, had difficulty speaking, and was dazed and confused. Margarito Carty allegedly told police that she takes several medications of a high dosage, to which police reportedly believe that she could have been under the influence of a controlled substance. That, they say, would “render her unsafe and unable to provide the duty of care, or protection the children required”.
Theresa Margarito Carty is behind bars on $40,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is set for January 30th.
