Road rage incident in Chambersburg leads to drug, reckless endangerment charges for Waynesboro man

04 December 2023- A Waynesboro man escapes a gun charge for having a BB gun in his vehicle but is still charged with a number of misdemeanors following an alleged road rage incident at a number of locations in Franklin County. Ralph Simmons, Jr is charged with misdemeanor simple assault, misdemeanor reckless endangerment, misdemeanor disorderly conduct, misdemeanor marijuana possession, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently behind bars in Franklin County on $25,000 bail.

Troopers were originally dispatched to investigate a road rage incident on I-81NB around mile marker 24, Franklin County around 10:20am on December 2nd. Police say that a driver was operating erratically and brandishing a gun at another motorist. That driver, now identified as Ralph Simmons, Jr, was later apprehended during a traffic stop on Spring Street, Shippensburg Borough.

Prior to the arrest, police interviewed the victim. She reportedly told them Simmons was varying speed, cutting her off, and slamming his brakes while in front of her. During the incident, Simmons allegedly reached down below his seat and showed what she believed to be a functional firearm. When she tried to get away from him again, Simmons allegedly showed the gun again.

Simmons was apprehended following a traffic stop on Spring Street in Shippensburg. During questioning, he allegedly told police the gun was actually a BB gun and that he never pointed it at the victim. While he did grant a search of the vehicle, he did reportedly specified there was crack in the car.

When officers conducted a search, they found the gun and confirmed it to be a BB gun. Additionally, they allegedly found the car to have crack in the center console as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the back seat.

Ralph Simmons is behind bars on $25,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for December 12th.
