President Joe Biden signs executive order about the southern border

June 4 – President Joe Biden today signed an executive order that will shut down the southern border between Texas and Mexico once the daily encounters reach 2,500 people.

The border will reopen once the number falls to 1,500, according to reports.

Pat Ryan of NewsTalk 103.7FM said, “Hold on just a second, weren’t we just told from the same guy who sold your steel that you paid full price for and then he sold the steel for pennies on the dollar, weren’t we just told by the occupant that he couldn’t do anything about it? Now that we’ve got millions of people over the southern border, Lord only knows what they’re going to do to your kids and your grandkids, now we want to limit to oh well let’s just have 2500 people a day, which equates to how many a year when you’ve already gotten millions here that you’re paying for their heat and their electricity and their cell phones and their food and their upkeep. I don’t know what this guy is thinking. He’s clearly not thinking. There’s nothing in there anymore here. How do you have the stones to say I’m going to take executive action when he said he couldn’t do it in the first place?”

Attorney Clint Barkdoll said, “I think a court will eventually strike it down. It’s just like so many of these executive orders over the years we’ve talked about, you wonder if internally, they know this is illegal. It’s going to be struck down, but this is politically popular right now. Some would say better late than never. Some would say too little too late. But anyway, you cut it, it’s likely illegal. This executive order, it’s actually going to limit people coming into the US over the southern border seeking asylum status. Well, the law is clear whether we like it or not, legally, you can come into the US and claim asylum and if you meet the criteria for asylum, the US government can’t send you back right away. Well, the president now with an executive order is going to say no more asylum seekers once it hits 2,500 a day, and that’s a week average and that’d be still 75,000 people a month. But once it hits 2,500 a day, the border is cut off. Now interestingly, that number is less, remember that bipartisan Senate package that did not get through the House, that was going to cap it at 4,000 a day. It’s not clear where this 2,500 number came from. But politically it’s popular.”

The debate between Biden and Republican candidate for president Donald Trump is only a few weeks away.

Barkdoll said, “This will give Biden a talking point. Campaign season is ramping up and just like these other executive orders, he knows that it will take months for this challenge to work its way through a federal court system to get a final answer. We might be past the November general election until a court says this is illegal. But in the meantime, it’s likely the executive order will be allowed to be implemented, even though months from now a court may say it was illegal from square one.”

Michele Jansen of NewsTalk 103.7FM noted, “Well, the problem is the undoing of executive orders that he did when he first came into office and throwing out the welcome mat to immigrants from around the world. That is what has hurt the system the most. We’ve seen this president has no problem at all abusing the process even if oh down the road, it’s going to be overturned. He has no problem at all abusing that process. He showed us over and over and over again and yet now that the polls are going badly for him, now that they’re worried about the presidency in the fall, well all of a sudden he’ll abuse this process. But it’s too little too late, because he’s already opened the floodgates. We’re already overwhelmed. That was the problem. The way he did things when he first got into office just ensured the whole system was going to be overwhelmed. Yes, the immigration system has been broken. Yes, this has been going on for decades. Yes, we can blame both parties, especially in Congress for this mess. But that doesn’t stop the fact that this particular so-called leader ruined the perception that there was any prohibition to crossing this border and now he’s trying to undo it with this little tiny tweak right now. It’s not going to work because people understand it’s only political, people understand it’s so overwhelmed at this point that they can’t possibly really start regulating it very well anyway. But oh, we’re going to pretend to the voters that we’re actually doing something.”

Barkdoll said, “To put the 2,500 in context, remember in December was the high watermark. Over 10,000 people a day cross the border. That number has come down since December, but it’s still very, very high. You’re going to hear a lot in the next few days about the Trump Muslim ban. Remember when Trump took office he issued an executive order that banned people from six predominantly Muslim countries from coming into the US. Remember, there were similar court challenges. It took years to finally get that resolved. I think you’re going to hear some similar arguments brought up on this executive order now from Biden making the comparison that you can’t do this from an executive standpoint. It needs congressional action. Maybe Biden feels that this will force Congress to do something. But we know over these last few months, the Senate and the House have not been able to get together on anything related to this immigration issue.”
