Pills, illegally owned gun found during Franklin County traffic stop of NJ man

28 February 2024- A traffic stop due to heavily tinted windows ends with a New Jersey man behind bars in Chambersburg on gun charges. Kyle Baker of Newark, New Jersey is charged with felony possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, misdemeanor marijuana possession, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. Baker is behind bars on $50,000 bail, which he failed to post.

PSP Troopers were on regular patrol of I-81NB near mile marker 14 around 8:45pm on February 27th when they reportedly saw a Toyota Corolla with a heavy tint on multiple windows as well as having crossed over the white fog line. A traffic stop was then made on the vehicle.

Approaching the vehicle, Troopers say they immediately smelled burnt marijuana coming from the inside of the car. Additionally, the reportedly saw a “marijuana cigarette” in the center console of the sedan. Speaking to the female driver, Troopers asked her to step out in order to get off the roadway and talk near the passenger side of the car.

The driver allegedly told police where she was coming and going from before being asked who the passenger was. Troopers say that the driver hesitated on their passenger’s last name. She did, however, tell the Trooper his full name and specify him as her boyfriend.

Due to the circumstances, Troopers asked to search the vehicle and were subsequently granted by the driver.

During a search of the vehicle, Troopers say they found a pill bottle with 25 MDMA pills, a clear baggie of marijuana in the glove compartment, a marijuana cigarette in the center console, and an unloaded Smith & Wesson SD9 VE handgun with a magazine nearby it containing 18 hollow point rounds. The passenger, Kyle Baker, took ownership of all illegal items, according to PSP.

Baker was identified by his New Jersey driver’s license and was determined to be a convicted felon, although the nature of the felony is not known. This makes him a person ineligible to own a firearm. He was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

Kyle Baker is behind bars on $50,000 bail.
