Ohio man arrested with stolen car in Chambersburg, runs away after it starts on fire

08 March 2023- A vehicle fire in the borough of Chambersburg leads police on a path to arresting an Ohio man on stolen property charges. Michael Clayton Adkins is charged with felony receiving stolen property. He’s behind bars on $50,000 bail.

On March 3rd, Chambersburg PD were dispatched to the intersection of S Fourth Street and E Washington Street for reports of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, CPD ran the plates on the car and found it was stolen out of Ohio. The driver of the vehicle had apparently fled before the police arrived, but Communications allegedly advised police the suspect could be a Michael Adkins.

Using borough security cameras, police allegedly followed to operator to Carson’s Motel on Loudon Street. A hotel employee said that a man had just checked into a room using an Ohio ID with a name of John Sauers. Police tried to make contact with that man, but he allegedly attempted to flee out of the back window. CPD were able, however, to take himself into custody where he allegedly identified himself as John Sauers. After he was informed that he was under an official police investigation, the man allegedly identified himself as Michael Adkins.

Adkins is behind bars on $50,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for March 14th.
