Now Cookie Monster is weighing in on shrinkflation

March 6 – A tweet from, of all beings, the Cookie Monster on Monday has opened up a whole firestorm of backlash.

The tweet from the fuzzy blue monster was this:  “Me hate shrinkflation. Me cookies are getting smaller.”

Cookie Monster has more than 600,000 followers.

A number of people are wondering if it is in poor taste to have a child’s puppet weigh in on a political issue.

Pat Ryan of NewsTalk 103.7FM pointed out, “Not only does NPR shake you down when they play Crosby, Stills and Nash and beg for money there, then they run a whole bunch of advertising, then they get funding from the federal government. Now your tax dollars are going to pay for Cookie Monster, doing some sort of community announcements where he’s all upset about shrinkflation. Shame on you monsters, not cookie monsters, but shame on you monsters using Cookie Monster to go and brainwash the dumb kids to begin with, I mean it’s bad enough you’re doing to them in schools, but now we’ve got to go to Sesame Street and do more politics and more agendas going through. It’s outrageous and paid for by me for freaking sake.”

Attorney Clint Barkdoll noted, “I’m curious to see the FOIA request on how much was public television or the rights owners of Cookie Monster paid for this? This is part of Biden’s push on shrinkflation. Definitely an odd marketing campaign. I will be curious to see what the costs of this are, if and when we ever learn that.”

Michele Jansen of NewsTalk 103.7FM wondered, “What was any kind of coordination between the White House and this? This is pretty awful, especially when you know tax dollars go to funding Cookie Monster’s show and public television. Also Casey’s response. How about that? Because wasn’t he campaigning on that when he says got it and I want to continue to fight the greed send $3? I don’t know what else that would be? Isn’t that a campaign ask?”

“Arguably it was,” Barkdoll agreed. “Of course, Casey, I think in the last week, he’s one of the three or four Senators that they’re introducing legislation about shrinkflation. They see this as politically popular. He had some posts about can you chip in? After this was rolled out yesterday. So the whole thing I thought was bizarre.”

Ryan said, “Bob Casey supports the Biden agenda. He’s a good dog. So they break your legs and now they’re handing you crutches. This is how they work and for them to use Cookie Monster, right after your kids. It’s just terrible.”
