Masks will be optional in the Chambersburg Area School District – for now

July 28 – The Chambersburg Area School Board met last evening and one of the agenda items included the Health and Safety Plan for the 2021-2022 school year.

The district needs to submit the plan to the Pennsylvania Department of Education by July 30. It will go into effect on August 1.

The plan was approved in an 8-1 vote.

Wearing of masks within the schools are currently optional in accordance with the state and the vote by the School Board last month. It is mandatory on buses within the district because of the federal mandate for public transportation.

The public is asked to understand that these rules and regulations exist as of now. If the numbers go up or anything changes, these conditions could change. It’s a fluid situation.

The school board plans to monitor conditions and will follow CDC requirements – not guidelines. If the CDC requires it, the district will follow it.

The optional masks go both ways – people can choose to wear them if they want or have a medical or health issue.

While bullying is a worry, district policy is zero tolerance of bullying.
