Maryland applauds SCOTUS’ decision on legality of domestic-violence firearm restraining orders

21 June 2024- In response to today’s United States Supreme Court’s 8-1 ruling in U.S. v. Rahimi, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following statement:

“The lives and safety of domestic abuse survivors and their families depend on common-sense gun laws that prevent people who intend to harm others from accessing firearms. Today’s Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Rahimi upheld a federal law that bars certain individuals subject to a domestic-violence restraining order from possessing a gun. This ruling is a step in the right direction, helping to keep survivors and their families safe from preventable gun violence.

This is one tool of many, including Maryland’s own public safety statutes and other state and federal gun violence prevention measures, that must be in place to keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers. The Court’s action today will help protect lives, but more needs to be done. My office will always support common-sense gun laws.”
