Man arraigned following 2022 break in at State Line jewelry store, believed to be part of organized ring

21 June 2024- A Prince George’s County man is finally behind bars in Franklin County, PA after a 2022 jewelry store robbery that multiple departments have been investigating since 2022. Montae Ocie Dempsey is behind bars in Franklin County after being charged with felony burglary, felony theft, and felony criminal mischief damaging property. He failed to post bail of $150,000. Another person has been charged with this case, as well, with Robert Lee Brown III of Oxon Hill, Maryland having charges with an identical Incident Number to Dempsey’s charges. Additionally, the date of the offense is identical. At this time, Brown has not been arraigned on the charges, but has identical charges to Dempsey.

PSP Chambersburg Troopers were dispatched to BBS Jewelers on Pennsylvania Avenue in State Line around 2:45am on September 23rd, 2022 for a burglar alarm. When Troopers arrived, they found the business to have significant damage to it with multiple items stolen.

Speaking to the owner and getting access to security camera footage, Troopers say they found that two actors arrived on scene around 2:38am and forced their way into the building. They then used a sledgehammer to destroy display cases and remove the jewelry. In total, the estimated loss of jewelry was $65,596.

Just under two weeks after this incident, Troopers were contacted by Calvert County, Maryland authorities who were investigating “an organized crew of individuals who have been committing similar burglaries throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.” One of the men that they had identified in that case was Montae Dempsey of Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Dempsey’s home in Prince George’s County was searched by police, with them allegedly finding numerous numerous pieces of jewelry and several electronic devices including Dempsey’s cell phone. That cellphone was later analyzed, with Troopers and the detective from Calvert County finding that Dempsey had allegedly been searching for BBS Jewelers in the hours before the burglary as well as texted another person asking if they “are still on” for tonight. Additionally, Troopers say that the data from Dempsey’s phone showed that he had traveled from the Temple Hills, Maryland area to the area around BBS Jewelers, then back to Temple Hills all during the night of the burglary.

Dempsey was formally charged following the significant investigation back on June 12th of 2023, with him being arraigned in Franklin County on June 14th of 2024.

Again, PSP and the Franklin County Court System are still awaiting the arraignment of Robert Lee Brown III on his charges. He is also facing additional charges relating to a different incident in Antrim Township that took place on September 28th, 2022. Also charged in that September 28th incident is Randell Jamal Wright of Temple Hills, Maryland.
