August 12 – This week began with the Federal Bureau of Investigations raiding the Mar-a-Lago home of former president Donald Trump.
Since then the theories abounded. Why were they there? What were they looking for? Was this all a set up?
United States Attorney General Merrick Garland held an incredibly brief press conference yesterday where he said the federal government is filing a petition to open the FBI warrant in the best interest of the public.
A recent Washington Post report suggested classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items for which FBI agents were searching at Mar-a-Lago.
Christina Bobb, an attorney for Trump, was on the Ingraham Angle last night on Fox News where she said, “This is what the Democrats do. They don’t have any good reason for doing what they did. The pathetic pressor that Merrick Garland held for three minutes was insufficient, so they had to create fear. Normally they should come out with exactly what happened and why and explain themselves and if it was a good reason, they would have solid ground. They are not solid ground.”
What are the real answers here?
Attorney Clint Barkdoll pointed out, “Going back to Laura Ingraham last night, there’s more of that interview where Ingraham really pushes her and Bobb admits she hasn’t even talked to Trump and she has no idea if there’s nuclear information in those boxes and Ingraham I thought did a pretty good job at pressing her on that.”
The federal magistrate judge gave Trump until 3 p.m. today to respond to that request.
Barkdoll said, “This thing just gets stranger and stranger.”
A little before midnight last night, Trump came out fully supporting the release of the warrant.
Barkdoll said, “What’s odd about it is, as we’ve known since Monday, Trump has the warrant. He could have released it on Monday, but now that the feds want to release it, Trump’s saying yeah, this is great, release it. So I don’t know what we’ll see happen today.”
Will Trump release the warrant? Will the judge sign the order to release it?
Barkdoll said, “Any way you cut it, I think by tomorrow at this time the public is going to see what is in this warrant. The Washington Post is claiming that there was very highly classified information they were seeking related to nuclear weapons. Again, we don’t know that. We’ll see if the warrant confirms that or like so much this week a lot of the reporting has not been accurate. So we’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours.”
Another question is: why wouldn’t Trump release the warrant? What would be his reasoning?
Barkdoll said, “This has been a mystery to me since Monday. The only thing I can surmise, he’s benefitting from this. Trump is raising a fortune in fundraising in these last five days and I think politically he’s benefitting from this. When the feds came out yesterday and said we’re filing a motion, did they essentially call his bluff? He could have released this as early as Monday, but maybe he just wants this to be I’m not going to do that, he wants the feds to have the burden of all of it.”
Trump and his team would have been given the warrant at the time the FBI went into his property on Monday.
Michele Jansen of NewsTalk 103.7FM said, “John Sullivan (reporter with the Washington Post), he’s saying that he got from six sources that there’s nothing in the warrant that would have, that’s beyond looking for classified documents mishandled or something like that. He said the idea there was something more there that the judge would have gone (after), of course we’re also finding out about this judge. He’s very, very anti-MAGA. Very anti-Trump. He even had to recuse himself from a case involving Hillary Clinton and the Trump things. Why? Why did they have to go to that guy, then? Search somebody who was probably more apt to give the okay for this then somebody else. That’s very suspicious. There’s also this whole ideas were the cameras on? Were the cameras off? We’re hearing, oh, they turned off the cameras and of course that could lead people to be very nervous. If you’re in there for hours and hours and you’re saying you’re just collecting a very narrow, based on a narrow focus, according to Merrick Garland, why do you need to have 30 people? Why does it need to be that many hours? And if they can just do anything they want, the lawyer wasn’t allowed to see what they were doing, the cameras were turned off. I think people would be worried about planting evidence. What the heck are they doing? Are they just looking at everything and trying to find something, which would be the MO from the past. But then we also hear they were able to watch the safe being broken into, so was the camera on part of the time? There’s so much confusing information out there.”
Pat Ryan of NewsTalk 103.7FM said, “What’s the deal with the federal government? What the hell is with this government that I can’t record everything and what’s happening here?”
The story of the cameras has definitely been an issue. Bobb had said Trump watched the safe being broken into on the closed-circuit surveillance, but yet other reporting said it was all turned off.
Barkdoll pointed out, “As we know from our talks with FBI people and other law enforcement and I know this from my experience, the defendants and their attorneys, they are not allowed to be present when these warrants are being executed. They are of course then allowed to see the inventory and what was taken, which we’ll have released today. Again, 30 people sounds like a tremendous amount of people on something like this, so I’m curious to see in this warrant, is there just such a cache of information that they felt they needed that many people. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a warrant that involved this many people. Maybe some of it’s for their own safety. There’s already these suggestions this week about the nefarious things the FBI is doing, so maybe they wanted 30 people there so it’s just such a large group, they would be able to put all those people on the record to verify what happened or what didn’t happen as the case might be.”
Jansen asked, “But would anybody trust it? After we found out how the FBI and members of the FBI lied when it came to what Trump was put through for four years, what the whole country was put through for four years on the Russia collusion.”
Ryan asked, “What about the Hunter laptop?”
Jansen continued, “To hear Merrick Garland talking about we’re going to apply the law equally without fear or favor. You just want to laugh out loud when you hear him say that. He sounded like a little petulant teenager trying to justify himself yesterday.”
Ryan said, “Right. Nothing to see with the smashed up phones from Hillary or Hunter Biden and all the rest of the nightmare. What’s going on with Pelosi’s husband out there? This is turning into an s-show.”
Barkdoll said, “This discussion we’re having is exactly why I think regardless of what they release, much of the country already has their mind made up about this. For example, what if the warrant reveals that they found nuclear codes? And I don’t think that’s what’s going to come out. I think you’re going to have people in their respective corners either saying, look, he needs to go to jail or on the other side, that’s fake. It was planted. No one really trusts the process, which is a huge problem. I think you’re going to see a huge battle emerge over the next few days because they’re going to release this information and both sides will spin it to the best they can to either favor Trump or go against Trump and in the end, it really undermines confidence in the system. I think most of the country has already made their mind up about where this thing needs to come out.”
Ryan suggested, “Well in the middle here, though, it’s the middle of the country that has to take a good, hard look at okay, this is getting a little bit out of control. You’re right. The folks on the right hand side, the Trump supporters are going to be where they are and the far left or the left side are going to go orange man bad, no matter what. If you can look at your gas and your groceries and you can look at 87,000 IRS agents, and if you’re still that stupid on the left hand side to line up there, that’s your own problem. I can’t do anything to help you there, but it’s the people in the middle that are going to go at what point do I just stop believing this stuff and start going towards the Trump organization and what’s being done to Donald Trump is heading right for you.”
One real question about the raid on the Mar-a-Lago home is why couldn’t someone watch what was going on in their own, private home?
Barkdoll said, “If Trump owns the property, he has a right to be watching what’s happening on those closed circuit TVs. The reporting is this seizure happened in I think three different rooms. That might be part of what gets released today. Were those cameras on? Did they watch it? I would not be surprised if this whole thing is on video tape. They knew going into this that there were going to be all these suggestions that this was fake or this stuff was planted. I’ll bet that there is surveillance from the agents on the ground, maybe all 30 of them that when this stuff starts to come out, here’s the full, unedited, unfiltered footage from their own body cams or whatever to let everyone see here’s exactly what happened from the minute they walked in to the minute they walked out.”
Jansen pointed out, “This is the same MO as we saw before with the Russia collusion thing in terms of we’re going to put some things out in the media and then it’s out there and then everybody’s speculating on it. To say nuclear information, what does that mean? A lot of people are saying nuclear codes, we are in such danger. Well, if we were in such danger, why did they take a couple weeks to get the warrant after they had this information? Why did they do the warrant on a Friday, but not execute it until Monday. There’s nothing that urgent in that, but then they put out just enough information into the press so that everybody starts speculating. It feels like it’s being set up, just like when Flynn was interviewed to catch him and make him break the law? This feels like the same MO.”
Barkdoll said, “Here’s a question I would be asking people on both sides of this debate. Is there anything you might see or hear today that would change your mind? I have a feeling the answer for most people is no. People have, they’re so ingrained in what they think the answer to all this is, even though truly we don’t know much at all. I think because of the history, what’s happened these last few years has really undermined the public’s confidence in the system. It doesn’t matter what they reveal today in this warrant. For the majority of the county, it’s not going to change their mind. It’s that big swath of people in the middle that might be open minded to look at it either way that’s really going to influence where these kind of things come out.”
“The problem is it makes us distrust more,” Jansen said. “And this is bad for our democracy.”
“They don’t care,” Ryan pointed out.
Jansen continued, “But when they talk about an existential threat to our representative democracy, this is it. When you demoralize people and make them distrust the government this much, when you make them afraid, making it worse is bad. You’re going to make people now even more afraid to be honest.”
“So what’s your solution?” Ryan asked.
Jansen said, “Get the chaos-makers out. We definitely need to get these people out of Congress.”
“I’ve got a guy who handshakes in the air!” Ryan exclaimed.
Jansen said, “That’s what I’m saying. This is what people have to pay attention to. This is destroying our democracy. Exactly what they’re doing right now with the FBI, putting all this distrust…”
Ryan said, “But I can’t help the idiots that voted for this guy, that bought the YouTube stuff and that saw the cognitive decline in his speech.”
Jansen suggested, “But we’re trying now to open their eyes to see look at all the fear and distrust this administration is causing.”
Ryan said, “There’s nothing that’s going to save someone that’s got a Fetterman and a Shapiro sign that replaced a Biden/Harris sign.”
Jansen said, “I’m talking about the people in the middle here seeing the fear and the distrust and the media lying. Look at the Washington Post. They put out one comment about isn’t this causing more political or idea that they’re acting politically, then they get pushed back and they pull that down. That’s not journalism. We’ve got to realize this administration is the one causing the chaos and the destabilization and they need to be taken away from this power.”
