I-81 corridor from Maryland through Virginia under Excessive Heat Watch Saturday

20 June 2024- An Excessive Heat Watch has been declared for most of Western Maryland, the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and extending southbound down the I-81 corridor. Issued by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC, it applies to the worst parts of the current heatwave, running from “Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening”.

The NWS says dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 108 are possible throughout portions of north central and western Maryland, northwest and western Virginia, and eastern and panhandle West Virginia.

Due to the excessively high temperatures and humidity, heat related illnesses could increase significantly during the weekend. The NWS continues, saying oppressive heat and humidity will overspread the area Saturday and last into Sunday.

Because of the heat, everyone is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives, neighbors, pets, and livestock. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
