Hefty bail given to NYC man who police say crashed south of Chambersburg

12 December 2023- A Queens-area man is behind bars today in Franklin County following a crash in Chambersburg. Horace A Smith of Saint Albans, NY is facing charges of misdemeanor DUI as well as four citations for careless driving and other traffic violations. Smith is behind bars on $275,000 bail.

Around 5:20am on December 10th, PSP were dispatched to an area on Wayne Road south of Chambersburg for a reported erratic driver. A witness to the driver reportedly told dispatch that a silver Honda Civic was “driving all over the roadway”. While en route, police were told that the previously mentioned Civic had crashed on Wayne Road.

Police say that as soon as the crash happened, the man, described as a thinner man wearing a white shirt, jumped out of the driver’s side and tried to asses the damage before hopping back in the car and trying to leave the scene. However, due to the heavy front end damage of the car crashing into the embankment, the vehicle did not make it very far before stopping in both the southbound lane of PA-316 and the road’s shoulder.

Police arrived on scene and found a Honda Civic with NC plates and heavy front end damage as well as the previously described man. That man, now identified as Horace Smith, reportedly was unable to provide registration or insurance for the vehicle but he did have his NY driver’s license. That license, police say, was suspended and he was subsequently arrested.

Horace Smith remains behind bars in Franklin County on $275,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for December 19th.
