HBO’s John Oliver offers Clarence Thomas $1 Million a year to resign from Supreme Court

19 February 2024- Yes, you read that right and no, it’s not HBO themselves putting the money up for this bet. The host of the streaming and premium channel’s weekly news program Last Week Tonight returned to the airwaves this week with a juicy offering.

Oliver’s show features a main topic of the show each week, with his first night back focused on fixing the Supreme Court. In this regard, much of the show’s runtime was focused on Justice Clarence Thomas and his lack of recusal when it comes to cases he may have conflicts of interest in. Additionally, the show shed light on expensive gifts that Thomas had been offered from special interests, including right-leaning megadonors.

Closing out the show, Thomas was offered a real proposal from Oliver to resign from the court for $1 million a year for the rest of his life. That money was all to be ponied up by the host himself, with him telling audiences and Thomas, “HBO is not putting up the money for this. I am personally on the hook. You can make me really regret this. I could be doing standup tours to pay for your retirement for years”.

Oliver pointed at Justice Thomas specifically with this offer, saying, “If we’re going to keep the bar of accountability this low, perhaps it’s time to exploit that low bar the same way billionaires have successfully done for decades”.

The kicker? Oliver also offered Thomas a brand new, state-of-the-art $2.4 million motor coach to tour the country in his retirement from the nation’s highest court.

Now, will Thomas accept the offer? That remains to be seen, but Oliver has publicly said the Justice has 30 days to accept or reject the offer.
