Come experience Chambersburg’s Rose Rent ceremonies this weekend!

07 June 2024- A part of history that has been continued all the way from the beginning of the 19th Century, Chambersburg again celebrates a beautiful rent service this weekend.

Zion Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ has stood at the corner of Main and Liberty (originally German) Streets since 1813. The church is notable as a historic site for a number of reasons, including that Zion is one of Chambersburg’s three “Rose Rent Churches” (along with The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring and First Lutheran Church), each of which pays its annual rent of a single rose.

This 200-year plus tradition is historically unique: In Zion’s deed is the stipulation that each June, the congregation pay the annual rent of one rose from the church grounds to a descendant of town founder Benjamin Chambers’ family, “in perpetuity.”

This Sunday June 9, starting at 9:00 am, there will be a full breakfast cooked and served by the men of Zion, and at 9:45 am a brief historical program will be presented.

At 10:30 am the rose will be chosen along Main Street from one of Zion’s own Rose Bushes and presented to a Chambers family descendant, during the 10:45 am Annual Rose Rent service.
