City Council Mulls Rent Relief

HAGERSTOWN – City Council will discuss granting rent relief to several entities during a work session Tuesday.

The Hagerstown Ice and Sports Complex, Nena’s Curbside Cafe & Catering, and Taste of Reggae have all requested rent relief because of hardships from the pandemic.

“The city can use all of the money they can get right now,” said Wes Decker, the City Hall Communications Officer. “We’ve talked about that with the Hagerstown Suns and back payments on utilities.”

In May, the low Single-A Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League, requested rent and utility relief as part of its lease agreement with the city.

“This is more difficult than the conversation with the Suns,” Decker said. “As far as the Ice and Sports Complex and the concessionaires are concerned there is no contract. It all comes down to what the council members decide.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an adverse effect on the city’s cash flow with back utility payments totaling more than one million dollars.
