17 October 2023- In June 2022, Robinson Iron Corporation, from Alexander City, Alabama, removed the cast iron walls and pedestals from the fountain on Glen Street, to be refurbished and reinstalled at a later date. Since then, the Borough Highway Department determined that the remaining concrete structure needed to be replaced.
In April 2023, Grant A. Marshall, Professional Engineer, was hired to provide engineering design services for the reconstruction of the fountain basin. In July 2023, R.A. Hill, Inc. was hired to remove the existing concrete fountain basin and construct a new concrete basin.
Please be advised that on Monday, October 16, 2023, R.A. Hill, Inc. removed the existing concrete fountain basin and installed a temporary fence around the site. They will soon begin construction of the new concrete basin. When finished, Robinson Iron Corporation will return to Chambersburg to reinstall the refurbished cast iron walls and pedestals to include the artistic scrollwork. It is the Highway Department’s goal to finish the project no later than December 31, 2023, with the fountain to be operational in the spring of 2024.
Vehicle access around the fountain will be restricted during construction activity with contractor or Borough representatives present to properly direct vehicles through the site.
