Chambersburg PD were initially dispatched to an active retail theft in the borough at the Rural King on May 3rd. The caller, CPD say, said that a man was inside the store concealing merchandise on his person and was also seen with an axe and knives. After finding the man inside the store, CPD say they observed a red handle knife protruding from his sweatshirt pocket and it was removed for safety. That knife, officers say, was merchandise from the store and empty packaging was found where it was regularly displayed for sale.

When Smith’s information was run by CPD, an active arrest warrant was found for him on failure to appear in a case involving charges of two counts of DUI, accidents involving damage, and careless driving.

A search of Smith’s person allegedly found him in possession of a pouch containing methamphetamine and marijuana, with CPD also finding syringes, a portable scale, rolling papers, and plastic baggies used for storage of the drugs. The meth was field tested and found to be positive for a controlled substance. Additionally, Chambersburg PD say that Smith has two prior retail theft convictions, making this a felony.
