Chambersburg Borough to meet Monday, discuss Southgate resale, redistricting of wards

20 January 2023- After a week off for the Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday, Chambersburg Borough Council reconvenes for a regular meeting and look to have a short but impactful list of items to discuss.

On the consent agenda at time of initial release includes approval of minutes, payments of bills, and more. Two points of notes in the consent agenda, which could either be passed as a whole or split up and added to the regular agenda, are the final cost of the Chambersburg Fountain repair and the motion to refer pedestrian movement on Loudon Street to the Parking, Traffic, and Streetlight Committee. According to the published meeting agenda as of January 20th, the cost final cost to repair the Memorial Fountain in the Square of Chambersburg will come in at $107,982. That is an increase from the previous estimated cost by $7,200. The work was done by ART Research of Lancaster, Inc. Additionally, council is directing the Parking, Traffic, and Street Light Committee to “examine the pedestrian movement at the intersection of Monticello and Loudon Street”. This comes after a number of pedestrian accidents in the area, including one that claimed the life of a man.

For the night’s regular agenda, point 7.01 looks to discuss the “Authorization for the Chambersburg Area Municipal Authority to release a prospectus to advertise for the potential resale and redevelopment of the Southgate Shopping Center.” Many know that the shopping center was sold for $4.5M last year to CAMA for the purpose of redevelopment and later to be sold.

Agenda point 7.03 looks to at “Authorization to instruct the Land Use and Community Development Department to prepare a draft map depicting potential reapportionment of the existing five borough wards based on population as determined by Census 2020.” With this process, updated population rolls give a better idea and give better representation to those inside of the borough as to better represent them on council. This process is similar to redistricting done by states for their own government offices as well as for congressional offices.
