04 August 2023- A Carlisle man is free on an unsecured bail after allegedly telling police he didn’t believe the girl he had sex with was 14 even though she told him. Julin Kasheem J Barrett is free on an unsecured bail of $50,000 after being charged with felony statutory rape, felony unlawful contact with a minor, and felony corruption of minors.
Pennsylvania State Police were dispatched on March 10th to one of the Chambersburg Area Middle Schools after a social worker at the school alerted police to a potential assault. The 14 year old victim allegedly told her social worker that she was sexually assaulted by a 20something year old black male she met online on the Swipr app.
Police conducted a minimal facts interview with the victim, who allegedly told them the same information as well as the fact it occurred in the back seat of a Jeep with a man she knew as Ju. Troopers were able to get surveillance video of where the assault allegedly occurred, which showed a male matching the description of the defendant entering and exiting a Jeep around 1:40am. After examination of the footage, Snapchat messages, and other sources, police allegedly came to the conclusion Ju was Julin Kasheem Barrett.
On May 11th, Pennsylvania State Police executed a search warrant on Barrett’s home in Carlisle and he was subsequently interviewed there. During the interview, Barrett allegedly said that he had consensual sex with the victim in the back of his Jeep only once. After the conclusion of the interview, Troopers asked Barrett if he knew the victim was 14 years old. He allegedly responded he did know this, but that he didn’t believe her.
Julin Barrett is free on an unsecured bail of $50,000. His preliminary hearing is set for August 29th.
