12 June 2023- After filing yesterday with the FEC and announcing today on First News with News Talk 1037FM, Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez rolls out a Congressional bid for Maryland’s open district 6. Martinez was appointed the next mayor of Hagerstown in February after the resignation of her predecessor Emily Keller, as the latter took a position in then Governor-elect Wes Moore’s Cabinet. Martinez, a Democrat and native Hagerstown resident, joins a field that looks to keep growing.
Current Congressman David Trone already announced his intention to run for the open Senate seat vacated by the retiring Ben Cardin. The two term Congressman has been continually criticized for not living in the district he represents, which was redistricted away from his residence. Many remember the seismic shifts in Maryland politics following the significant redistricting of the Maryland’s 6th, which saw long time Congressman Roscoe Bartlett unseated by John Delaney, then David Trone.
Martinez is likely the biggest name to enter the race so far, which also features House of Delegates members Joe Vogel and Brenda Thaiam, as well as Mariela Roca. Martinez is set to hold a formal announcement very soon.
