03 January 2023- After multiple rounds of voting and a hotly contested race, Democratic Representative Mark Rozzi wins the Speakership contest in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Rozzi, a representative in the Reading area since 2013, won the contest over Representative Carl Metzgar of Somerset County.
Metzgar was on the ballot for Republicans after early morning meetings saw him coming out of a narrow field of 4 other reps vying for the party’s official endorsement. Rozzi won the contest by a vote of 115 to 85.
Notably absent from the Speaker conversation was Joanna McClinton, the Democrat House Leader who had sparred with Republican Bryan Cutler, the Republican House Leader. Cutler had previously made it known he would not be running for the gavel.
