A Heartbreaking Weekend on Area Highways

4 September 2023 – Labor Day weekend kept first responders busy this weekend with at least 3 major accidents involving fatalities.

It started Friday morning in Maryland near the exit for Hagerstown Airport. Two people were killed, three injured as four 18 wheelers and two cars became entangled.

Police reported 55-year-old Wesley Merrick and Alicia Eve Cornell, both of Wellsville, New York, died at the scene. Two other passengers in a Tahoe, that initially struck the 18 wheeler braking for traffic, and the driver of one of the tractor-trailers also were injured, police noted.

Saturday night, 2 September 2023, two people were killed and three injured in a crash in the 5000 block of Lincoln Way East. State Police reported one car was traveling west on Lincoln Way East, crossed the center line, and crashed into vehicle two. The driver of the vehicle that crossed over the line, Joshua Reed, was pronounced dead at the scene. David Wentz, a passenger in the vehicle struck, died at Chambersburg Hospital as reported by PSP.

Sunday afternoon first responders were called to an auto on its side with 1 person confined. The accident was located in the 900 block of Lincoln Way West. Air medical was called to the scene no further details were available.
