HAGERSTOWN – Monday morning’s First News will cover this topic after 8:40am with Jim Kercheval, Executive Director, Greater Hagerstown Committee.
The decades-long tradition of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s Salute to Independence concert and fireworks show at Antietam National Battlefield is at risk and we need your help. Antietam Battlefield National Park’s leadership (NPS) has informed the Maryland Symphony Orchestra (MSO) it will not allow this treasured, patriotic event back to its home on the battlefield after the pandemic and a large-scale construction project broke continuity with the concert in 2020.
This decision was made without any public outreach to gain input or discussion with local stakeholders or local elected officials. This development is a serious blow to Washington County’s tourism economy and will end a long tradition deeply rooted in local families if our community does not speak up. Please visit Change.org/SaveOurSalute to learn more about this issue and sign a petition to compel the National Park Service to continue to host this treasured, patriotic event. You can also visit the “Save Our Salute” FaceBook Group to join in the conversation and post your family’s experience from past concerts. We would also appreciate sharing this with anyone you feel could help.
