2 Alarm Fire – Mount Royal Apartments

HAGERSTOWN – HFD issued this post after Thursday’s fire on Oak Hill Avenue…

At 6:44pm on Thursday, March 21, 2024, Hagerstown Fire Department units were alerted for an apartment fire at the Mount Royal Apartments located at 673 Oak Hill Avenue. Engine 2 arrived on scene very shortly after dispatch and found smoke showing from the top floor of a 4-story apartment building, and immediately went to work ensuring the building was being cleared of all occupants, and preparing for fire attack.

Battalion Chief 3 escalated the assignment to a working fire while still en route, and upon arrival on scene, the fire had progressed to venting out several windows on the north side of the building. All crews had quickly went to work performing fire suppression activities, but the fire had quickly advanced by entering into void spaces within the building.

A second alarm was sounded for additional firefighters to assist on the scene, and operations were switched to large volume hose streams from the outside of the building. Once a majority of the fire was extinguished with those streams, crews reentered the building to perform the extensive task of opening up walls and ceilings to continue fire extinguishment.

HFD will have staff on site throughout the night continuing to monitor the structure. The fire is under investigation by the Hagerstown City Fire Marshal’s Office.

A huge THANK YOU to all the automatic and mutual aid partners of the HFD that came to assist, all the support agencies (Emergency Services Support Units, auxiliary/fire police), or those that filled our stations to ensure the rest of the City continued to have fire protection!
